Opening Up To The World

Opening Up To The World

Using the house diaries from 1866 to 1925, Sr Patricia Harriss CJ explores life at the convent following 150 years in hiding.

What happened to the Bar Convent after nearly 150 secret years, when Catholic Emancipation came in 1829? How did life change after the ‘underground’ period for Catholics came to an end?

This online talk, delivered via Zoom, will look at the story told in the house diaries kept by Superiors in the period from 1866 to 1925, and especially at the community’s movement away from being a house on its own. We shall see its growing contacts and relationship with Mary Ward’s worldwide Institute; the development of its educational work and its involvement with the city of York, national and world events. Some amazing and little-known incidents will also be revealed.

This event is taking place on 8th November 2022 from 2pm to 3pm. It’s free to attend, though places are limited. Tickets are digital through Eventbrite please click to Reserve your tickets
